SMOKING RELATED DEATHS:

Every year that passes takes the lives of 400,000.

Yes, that's 400,000 American lives taken by smoking related deaths each year.

A few years back, I suggested a few ways for the owner of a cleaners to QUIT.

I had been taking my clothes to his cleaners for several years.

I thought he would know and understand that I would only be speaking as a friend.

I felt certain that he would not get mad or tell me to "mind my own business."

So I went ahead one Saturday morning and simply chatted with him about it.

I could tell immediately that he did not mind talking about it.

He said that he "wanted to QUIT and, in fact, had been trying to do so."

I mentioned the names of some of America's greatest actors, musicians, and legends.

They had snuffed their lives out SHORT because they could not or would not QUIT.


Humphrey Bogart, who played the unforgettable RICK, in "Casablanca,"had died at 57.

It was January 14, 1957 when the world, and all his movie fans, lost Rick-Bogey.


Think of the additional films he might have made had he lived longer.

The last year of Bogart's life was sad as he grew weaker each passing month.

Some of his closest friends would come to his home regularly to visit him.

I got the news about Bogart (Bogey) while serving in the United States Navy.

It was a rainy morning in Rhode Island. I was eating breakfast.

It was one of those "90 day wonder" navy facilities, and we were all at breakfast.

The radio blared out that Humphrey Bogart was dead at age 57.

I was a big fan and almost cried when I heard the news. I felt terrible.

One of our greatest movie stars was gone!! I was depressed about it for some time.

Very young at the time, I VOWED right on the spot that rainy morning to QUIT.

Yes, I VOWED TO QUIT my own pipe smoking that very day. I did it too the same day.


At the funeral for Bogart, I'll never forget what a close friend of the actor said.

Legendary film director, John Huston, said:

"There'll never be another Humphrey Bogart." How true!
